The Aiwaj
A Legacy of Rural Art
Aiwaj began as a quiet idea with a powerful belief — that skill can become strength, and dignity should never depend on circumstance.
Aiwaj is the art wing of the Wadarai Foundation, which works for the empowerment of rural, single women from the districts of the Marathwada region in Maharashtra.
The region has a long history of agrarian distress, resulting from multi-year droughts.
The women in our organisation do not own land or other forms of wealth. Their only assets are the skills they possess in their hands, in stitching and embroidery, in creating art on textiles. With increasing migration, we find that their skills run the risk of fading away into oblivion.
At Wadarai, we have the responsibility of nurturing and expanding the pool of women who can take the art forms forward. By being a purchaser and patron of our products, you too are become a part of this journey. On behalf of the women, we cannot thank you enough for your support and appreciation.
